Explanations for the causes of the tragedy and clarifications in the scenarios for what caused the tilting and finally the sinking of the boat with the hundreds of migrants in Pylos were given by Nikos Alexiou, a spokesman for the Coast Guard, insisting that “no attempt was made to moor the boats”.

Speaking to ERT, he asserted that the sinking of the traffickers’ boat, in the presence of passing vessels of the Port Authority, happened when the migrants from African countries, for an unknown reason, moved in one direction, changing the stability of the ship with 750 people.

He even confirmed the information that the captain of the boat drowned in the wreck with many dead, while at the same time the search for the rescue and exploration of the missing persons continues, although the hopes have almost vanished.

“There was no lack of means. Officially, we were there” replied the spokesperson of the Coast Guard for the fact that the lifeguard Aigaion Pelagos, which was anchored in Gytheio, did not rush to the scene for help at the critical hours.

Commenting on the information about whether ropes had been used on the ship, he explained that the coast guard did not do such a thing but the ropes had been thrown by sailors from the merchant ship that threw supplies to them.
