TOKYO (Reuters) – Nissan chief operating officer Ashwani Gupta will leave his post this month to pursue other opportunities, the Japanese automaker, in which Gupta helped set up implemented a recovery plan intended to simplify operations.

Nissan said in a statement that it plans to announce its new management composition on June 27, when Aswhani Gupta will leave the group.

Doubt has swirled over Aswhani Gupta’s future at Nissan since the automaker announced last month that the executive would no longer sit on the board when his current term expires on June 27.

Ashwani Gupta had joined Nissan’s management at the end of 2019 as the Renault partner tried to close the tumultuous chapter linked to the arrest and sacking of its longtime boss Carlos Ghosn.

In 2020, some of its allies unsuccessfully petitioned Nissan’s board to appoint Aswhani Gupta to the role of deputy chief executive, with hopes that he would continue the automaker’s turnaround and strengthen the alliance. with Renault and Mitsubishi Motors.

The departure comes as Nissan finalizes details of an overhaul of its alliance with Renault, a matter which sources say has given rise to tensions between Aswhani Gupta and chief executive Makoto Uchida. While the latter wanted to quickly wrap up talks with the French group, Gupta advocated more caution, people familiar with the matter have told Reuters in the past.

Before being appointed to the management of Nissan, Ashwani Gupta joined Renault in India in 2006, subsequently occupying a position in sales management.
