The interest of the foreign press is increasingly aroused in the last few hours by the results brought by the decision of the Greek government to announce – and from today to implement in practice – the compulsory vaccination for citizens over 60 years.
The reports highlight the increase in vaccinations achieved since the measure was announced and emphasize that Greece is the first to implement the measure in practice, but will soon be followed by Austria and Italy and possibly other EU countries.
Indicatively, the Bloomberg agency underlines that before the announcement of the mandatory vaccinations by the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis last November, about 520,000 elderly people in Greece had not been vaccinated. Since then, according to the Ministry of Health, approximately 220,000 citizens over the age of 60 have been vaccinated.
The agency notes the imposition of the fine from today Monday is a way to further boost vaccination levels and reduce the pressure on healthcare.

“Greece is first, followed by other EU countries”
The British ITV comments that at a time when European governments are considering additional measures to strengthen vaccinations “Greece becomes the first country to implement compulsory vaccination in practice”.
At the same time, ITV underlines in its response from Athens: “Greece may be the first but it will certainly not be the last. “Austria and Italy will both have similar rules by the end of February, and other countries are closely monitoring developments.”

The German newspaper Bild estimates that “many now seem to be vaccinating to avoid the fine” while noting the government’s estimates that “nine out of ten coronavirus deaths are in the age group of over 60”. The German newspaper, however, does not fail to mention the protests against the government by those elderly people who oppose compulsory vaccination.

The Euractiv website is also implementing the decision from today to impose a fine of 100 euros on unvaccinated Greek citizens over 60. It notes that the government has decided to make vaccination mandatory for this group of citizens because they are considered a vulnerable group. More specifically, nine out of ten citizens who die from coronavirus belong to the category over 60, seven out of ten are intubated, while eight out of ten intubated patients are unvaccinated.
