The polls open at 07:00 in the morning and close at 19:00 in the afternoon
Greek voters go to the polls today to exercise their right to vote and to elect the new government and the 300 members of the new Parliament.
Citizens who turn 17 within 2023 have the right to vote. Based on the electoral rolls, the strength of the electoral body is 9,813,595 Greek citizens of which 4,763,264 are men and 5,050,331 are women.
For the address of the polling station where they are voting, interested parties can be informed from the digital platform “Learn where you are voting” on the website of the Ministry of the Interior, https://mpp.ypes.gov.gr/#/, which is accessible and from Gov.gr. The information appears after filling in the fields “Surname”, “First name”, “Father’s name”, “Year of birth”, “Mother’s name” (optional), or only the “Surname” and “Special Electoral Number” fields. Alternatively, they can be informed by the telephone lines 2131361500 and 2131313800.
Voters must bring with them their identity card or the relevant temporary certificate from the competent authority or their passport or other document proving their identity (driver’s license, health card). It is noted that “cut” ID cards and expired passports are also acceptable.
Due to the elections, the identity and passport issuing offices at the local police stations are also open today, Sunday, as well as the relevant municipal services (such as the registry office and municipal affairs department) to inform the public and to issue identity certificates.
The identification of voters can also be done using the digital identity that is accessible through the government portal https://wallet.gov.gr. In this case, the holder of the digital ID can either press the quick scan button and show the QR code to the court representative, or press the “View QR code” button and after showing the QR code to the court representative, give and the additional code he will have received through the application.
Both options are equivalent in terms of the electoral process, with the first being considered easier.
Those who cannot wait outside the polling stations for a long time (pregnant women, the elderly, people with disabilities, the sick, etc.) vote with absolute priority, as well as those who cover service needs, such as officers of the Armed Forces, the Hellenic Police or employees who perform service for the elections. If their predecessors have an objection, they address the representative of the judicial authority or a member of the electoral commission, who are obliged to serve them as a matter of priority.
For people with disabilities and mobility problems, the operation of a special reception area, on the ground floor of each polling station, has been in effect since the May elections. Upon the voter’s arrival at the venue, the judicial representative of the electoral division to which the voter belongs is informed and arrives there with all the ballots and the required file. If necessary, the voter enters the screen together with any accompanying person and also with the judicial representative. After the voter leaves the voting booth, the judicial representative takes the envelope containing the ballot paper chosen by the voter, takes it to the corresponding polling station and drops it into the ballot box.
It is a reminder that we do not put a preference cross on candidate names as these elections are conducted by the list method, in which MPs are elected first in order to appear on the ballot papers.
The polls close at 19:00 and the votes are counted. After the completion of the procedure, each judicial representative transmits the result of his electoral division directly to the Ministry of the Interior via a tablet device. In this way, the times of the first safe and the final result, as well as of the crossover, are significantly reduced. According to experts’ estimates, an image for more than 10% of the territory will be available by 20:30, while by 22:00 it is expected that 80% – 90% of the election results nationwide will have been integrated.
