The cheese “cascavali“, in the 18th and 19th centuries, he traveled from the Pindus mountain range, to the Balkans, Italy, the southern regions of Russia, Turkey, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco and conquered the markets of the time.

A month ago, in the newspaper of the European Union on May 17, it was announced that the cheese with the name “Kaskavali Pindou” is approved in principle, as Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) product.

This positive development is the result of an initiative and a series of procedures undertaken in recent years by the Region of Epirus, for the traditional product, which is directly linked to the life of the Vlachs in the Pindos mountain range, but also the Balkans, where they arrived due to the activities and their movements.

Cheese is characterized, as a fine ingredient, with an important historical path.

The governor of Epirus, Alexandros Kahrimanis, expressed his satisfaction speaking to APE-MPE about the development and noted: “We knew that the road was difficult. It had been left for years. Tatiana Averov also helped me, she gave me notes from her father, the late Evangelos Averov, and then, in cooperation with the president of ELGO DIMITRA, Serko Harutounian, we reached the desired result.”

The “next day” is not an easy process, the regional governor points out, as private companies must show interest in its production, he says and notes: “We have made an agreement on the materials. These must come from the areas mentioned in the geographical indication.

No imported milks.

Exclusively Greek milk, from the region of Pindos and it is clarified that Pindos covers Western Macedonia, Thessaly and Epirus. We are fighting for the Greek livestock industry. It must rely on the quality that the natural environment has given it, and everything starts from there. Every consumer should know what he is buying, because today products containing milk or imported cheese are confused. The Greek identity is special and especially that of Pindos”.

After the registration of “kaskavali” cheese, as a PGI product, it is the turn, as the regional governor Alexandros Kahrimanis pointed out, of the “horde” of Aetomelitsa located in Grammos and the “tsalafouti” of Tzoumerko and Agrafo.
