A delegation of members of the US Congress was welcomed to GEETHA today, Tuesday, June 27, the head of the GEETHA general Konstantinos Floros.

As announced, the delegation, which is making an official visit to Greece. was accompanied by the US Ambassador to Greece George J. Tsunis and was attended by Senator Mike Crapo as leader, as well as members of Congress Senator John Thune, Senator Mike Lee, Senator John Cornyn, Congressman Russ Fulcher and the Secretary for the Minority Robert Duncan.

The GEETHA leader emphasized the particular security challenges that are emerging due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, but also as a result of revisionist trends in the wider region.

In this context, he pointed out the decisive role of Greece as a pillar of stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans region, which always acts in accordance with International Law and seeks to create new productive relations with friends, partners and allies both bilaterally and in multilateral and allied level.

He also highlighted the number of international exercises and joint trainings in which the Armed Forces participate as well as the tripartite defense cooperation schemes between Greece – Cyprus – Israel, Greece – Cyprus – Egypt and Greece – Cyprus – Jordan, which overall aim to consolidate of peace and security in the Eastern Mediterranean region and beyond.

He referred to the multi-level defense cooperation and the excellent military relations between Greece and the US, within the framework of the upgraded Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement as well as the strategic importance and value of Souda and Alexandroupolis in providing important facilities to the Armed Forces of both the US and other allies and our partners.

Concluding his presentation, the GEETHA leader pointed out once again the commitment of our country to its stabilizing role in the wider region as well as the commitment to further upgrade and strengthen the bilateral military cooperation of the Armed Forces of the two countries.

As part of the briefing for the delegation, the director of the Strategy-Policy-Defense Planning and Capabilities Branch of the GEETHA, Lt. Gen. (EA) Apostolos Mitsopoulos, presented issues of defense policy as well as current geopolitical developments, and a discussion followed.
