“He opened the door of the ward, came out and told us calmly, ‘come on, the child is doing something.’ She was very calm, she wasn’t anxious, she wasn’t shouting…”. With these words he described to Mixed Jury Court, Roula Pispirigouin her last moments Georginathe specialist pediatrician at the “Panagiotis and Aglaia Kyriakou” Children’s Hospital, Miss Tatarioti.

The witness testified about the four episodes of tachycardia and hyposaturation experienced by Georgina on the eve of her deathas well as the desperate attempts by doctors to bring the child back when on January 29, 2022 it suffered the fatal setback. According to her testimony, the mother’s attitude during all those anxious moments was calm and cool.

The doctor’s description of the moment when the battle to revive the child was lost was typical: “Then I commiserated with the mother and she thanked me in a somewhat formal manner”said Ms. Tatarioti.

As the doctor mentioned, in the two days before Georgina ended up, he examined her several times while taking the history from her parentsManos Daskalaki and Roula Pispirigou. “I learned that had a history of suspension, he had suffered encephalopathy and how he came to us from the hospital of Patras for further examination. He had episodes of desaturation and bradycardia. We were told he was in stable condition with good tests. We were told that the family had lost two children, one to liver failure and the other at home unexpectedly. I took a detailed history. I was told about the sudden deaths of the other two children. One with liver failure, which I found strange, and the other who went home with no history of sudden deaths in the family. I checked on Georgina, she was in a stable condition. He was certainly a child with encephalopathy, with good vital signs and good tests. The principal also looked into it, ma’am Mauritius. I then accompanied it to the Cardiology Department. No cardiac problem was found. We discussed changing medication. At first, the mother reacted because she told me that Mr. Iliadis was watching it and regulating the treatment. So contact was made with Mr. Iliadis and we changed the medicine”noted Mr. Tatariotis for January 27, 2022, the day of Georgina’s admission to “Aglaia Kyriakou”.

The next day, according to the witness, the mother informed the doctors about it first episode presented by Georgina. The doctor found that the little girl had tachycardia, tachypnea, and decreased satiety, and her head was turned to the left and her gaze was fixed. The episode was dealt with and oxygen was put on, so the child, who as the witness said “also had a kind of whining and restlessness”, came back.

A few hours later and while Georgina was stable “The mother comes out again and tells us that “the child is doing something”. We see a similar episode, tachycardia, tachypnea and drop in saturation. In about three minutes, the episode was resolved. Mother told us a phrase that impressed me and stuck with me, that the big episode with the bradycardia “hasn’t happened yet, you’ll see.”

After noon, as the doctor said, “The mother came out again and told us “the child is doing something”. The child was in the same situation. He had a feverish wave later in the day, 38 and something. We made a change in treatment, thinking it might be a seizure episode.”

According to the witness, the next day, in the morning delivery, she was informed that the mother, around midnight, had alerted the doctors that Georgina made a similar episode. During the examination that took place Georgina was steady, while – as he pointed out – he went in and saw Georgina other times as well. “The last time I came in it was half past one. Everything was stable and everything was fine. Then we completed the visit to other children’s wards… ».

Of the beginning of Georgina’s end, the witness said:

“At 2:30 in the afternoon, while I was on the phone with my caseworker about another child’s discharge, I heard the nurse yell. I immediately went up to the 4th, went into Georgina’s chamber and I saw my orderly and other doctors doing CPR on the child. I also came in and helped. We made a great effort for over an hour. At 15:50 we stopped. This time is recorded as the time of death. Afterwards, I sympathized with the mother and she thanked me in a somewhat formal process.”

During her examination by the defense, the witness said that because he was suddenunexpected from the child’s clinical picture, Death the doctors decided to keep Georgina’s blood samples in case someone asked for them: “After this incident and because it was a sudden death that we did not expect to happen because we had looked into it many times that day the child and his condition were stablewe decided to perform a forensic and toxicological examination as is customary in these cases and to take the blood and keep it in case someone asks for it”.
