The abandonment of animals has shown a significant increase in the last three years, while the fact that rare and exotic species – wild and domestic animals – are now being left on the streets, in parks and wherever one can imagine, is a cause of great concern, as he points out speaking to APE-MPE one of the two founders of the non-profit organization “Animal Rescue and Defense Squad”, 43-year-old Stellios Geronymakis.

“In the last year, our team collected ten rabbits, six snakes, four iguanas and several turtles,” he emphasizes.

In this context, yesterday at 11:45 in the morning, following a call received by the team from the Police, members of the Animal Rescue and Defense Squad collected a small boa constrictor from the area of Toumba, specifically from a park on Tsiapanou Street.

“The animal, 40-50 cm long, has many scratches from cats, is dehydrated and, as the X-ray showed, has a broken spine,” he says, adding that “fortunately, the animal’s wounds are not infected and it was definitely domestic.”

In addition, as he points out, two weeks ago the group received a phone call from a private individual, who informed them that “I have two pythons and an iguana, which I got from an acquaintance of mine who had taken them from their owner. If you don’t agree to take them, I will leave them on the street”, says Mr. Geronymakis, saying that “at least this gentleman behaved more honestly and didn’t immediately give up on the street, but called us first. Of course, we went and got them, of course.”

It is noted that the incident with the boa constrictor was uploaded by the non-profit organization team on their social media page.
