A 55-year-old man from Athens, who had come to Crete for tourism with his partner, breathed his last on Monday afternoon in the sea area of Falasarna.

The unlucky 55-year-old was seen floating while bathing, quite far from the coast as ERT broadcasts. The lifeguard, who was on duty at the beach, rushed immediately and took him ashore without his consciousness. In fact, this effort was particularly difficult, as bad weather conditions prevailed in the area, with strong winds and high waves.

On the shore, efforts were made to bring him back, both by the lifeguard and by the ambulance crew that rushed to the scene from the Kissamos Health Center.

However, their desperate efforts were unfortunately not crowned with success. At the Kissamos Health Center where he was treated, his death was simply confirmed. The forensic examination is expected to shed light on the causes of the drowning. Sources from the Port Authority state that the possibility that the drowning is due to adverse weather conditions is high. In fact, this afternoon alone, lifeguards had to intervene in the area in at least 12 incidents, in order to bring bathers ashore who were in danger from the waves.
