Rape – Thessaloniki: Lawyer Theofilos Alexopoulos outside SYRIZA – “Involved in allegations of victim blaming”

SYRIZA announced the suspension of the party status of Theofilos Alexopoulos, referring to a “frontal conflict with the moral and value burden of the party and the Left”, as he has undertaken the defense of one of the accused in the much-praised case of the rape of a 24-year-old from Thessaloniki.

Mr. Theofilos Alexopoulos as a lawyer has the obvious right and obligation to choose to whom he will provide his legal services.

As a member of the SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, however, he can not be involved in allegations of rape for “victim blaming”, which come in frontal conflict with the moral and value burden of the party and the Left.

For this reason, the status of party member of Mr. Theofilos Alexopoulos is suspended, until the case is fully clarified.

Earlier, Mr. Alexopoulos he had denied the complaints of the 24-year-old. In a statement issued, he states that he has never contacted her until today and that he has never verbally attacked her. His announcement was as follows:

I was saddened to learn that the 24-year-old girl, who on 1-1-2022 complained that she had been raped, referred to my name as the defendant’s defense attorney and stated that I had verbally assaulted her during her stay at the Police Station. To restore the truth, I want to emphasize that the process of pre-trial investigation in the context of pre-trial and prosecution is described by the Constitution and the CPC, and in this case was exercised by the Security Department of the White Tower of Thessaloniki. In this context, the role of the defense counsel is limited to the knowledge of the case file and the apology of the accused, acts that follow the testimony. Besides, communicating with the prosecution witnesses is a criminal offense, and even more so their intimidation! At no point in the pre-trial investigation and to this day have I ever come in contact with the complainant whom I do not know, and of course the alleged verbal attack never happened not only because it is illegal but mainly because it does not reflect my Principles and Ethics, the anthropocentric approach to the function that I exercise and to the respect that I owe and always show to all the actors of the trial. I am saddened that the function of the defense attorney and the role of the defender (whether he belongs to a lawyer or not, Ms. Triantaphyllopoulos) is taking place north of the communication circle around a case! ”
