Students, researchers and entrepreneurs from various fields participated in the week of summer events organized by the Hellenic Institute of Advanced Studies (HIAS) in Athens last week. The aim was to promote cooperation and exchange of knowledge on cutting edge issues.

The events started with the three-day courses on artificial intelligence, hosted at EKEFE Democritus. The lessons were attended 400 students and recent graduates from a wide range of majors. MIT professor Dimitris Bertsimas and other scientists introduced the Greek students to the limitless possibilities of artificial intelligence in various fields such as Medicine, Social Sciences, Engineering and Humanities.

The lessons are available on the HIAS YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@hellenic-ias/streams

The lessons were followed by the Artificial Intelligence Workshop with a theme “AI Frontiers and Interfaces” at the Eugenides Foundation, which aimed to bring together leading researchers in artificial intelligence and its applications from Greece and abroad to present cutting-edge research.

During the Workshop it was highlighted that artificial intelligence will not only affect many fields, but will also emerge as a new technical tool that will facilitate interaction between many disciplines.

The final event of the activities was the 2nd HIAS Symposium on “Bridges in Education, Science and Innovation”, which was also hosted at the Eugenides Foundation. The symposium focused on creating bridges in research, education and entrepreneurship between researchers working in Greece and abroad.

In addition to artificial intelligence, the reduction of carbon emissions in the shipping sector emerged as a cutting-edge topic at the conference.

“We are excited that HIAS has been able to bring together researchers from around the world to address some of the emerging challenges for Greece and the world,” points out the chairman of the HIAS Board of Directors and professor at Harvard University, Petros Koumoutsakos.

As he adds, “the success of all the events further consolidated the position of HIAS as a center of scientific exchanges and interdisciplinary collaborations”.

The Hellenic Institute of Advanced Studies was founded by its members Greek diaspora in order to use scientific knowledge for the benefit of Greece and the world.

Their goal is to create bridges and operate HIAS as a center for scientific exchanges between the Greek diaspora and scientists working in Greece, promoting the development of international, interdisciplinary collaborations for problems concerning society, such as energy, health, education, artificial intelligence, environment, transport, shipping, agri-food and inequality.
