THE Medical Association of Athens calls on citizens to take preventive measures against the heat, especially if they belong to the vulnerable groups of the population.
When the ambient temperature, exceed the upper tolerable limits and in combination with certain other factors (humidity, apnea, stillness, prolonged low winds of one direction, etc.), conditions can be created that are not tolerated by the human body. The pathological conditions that arise can lead to serious complications and endanger the life of the patient.
The avoidance of participation in sporting events during high temperatures and the scrupulous adoption of protective measures must be emphasized.
“We draw attention, especially to the vulnerable groups of the population, to strictly follow the precautions and prevention of the pathological conditions caused by high temperatures”, pointed out the president of ISA Giorgos Patoulis and added: “Especially the people suffering from cardiovascular diseases and other diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, kidney failure, lung diseases, etc., belong to the particularly vulnerable population groups and must take the appropriate measures in the summer months and especially during the heat season, in order to protect their health”.
The most important development of disorders of the body from high temperatures is heatstroke, which occurs after prolonged exposure to the sun mainly during the heat season and is manifested by a sudden increase in body temperature (>40-41oC), with redness and dryness of the skin, with a strong feeling of thirst, confused behavior, with spasms of the body and finally with loss of consciousness and a comatose state.
