Emergency inter-ministerial meeting on Tuesday – Open to the possibility of government intervention on the increased cost of ferry tickets
It is possible that there will be government intervention for increased cost of ferry tickets left the government spokesman. Pavlos Marinakis did not rule out the government taking measures, since ticket prices remain high, even though fuel prices have fallen.
Tomorrow morning an inter-ministerial meeting has been planned at the Maximos Palace with the participation of the political leadership of the Ministry of Shipping and in the afternoon there will be a meeting with the representatives of the Union of Seafarers. The aim is to investigate in depth whether the high prices of ferry tickets, while fuel costs and inflation in the industry have fallen, involve practices of profiteering, towards which the government has declared zero tolerance.
What kind of measures can the government take?
What is being considered by the government staff and the shipping ministry is either taxation of excess profits, or a cap on the profit margin based on a specific reference date.
Briefing political editors, the government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis answering a related question whether the government is considering measures, as well while fuel prices have fallen, the cost of tickets remains high, he said:
“The government has shown that it does not leave any such issue as this – which is very important – to chance, with direct interventions either like those made in energy and covering the increases, or in food precision” and completed:
“Yes, we are monitoring this issue and you will be informed immediately of news from the government.”
