Mandra and the surrounding settlements are threatened by fire from Dervenochoria, as the mayor of Mandra-Idyllia, Christos Stathis, reports to the Athens Agency, from the Panorama settlement where he is with his colleagues, they urge the residents to leave for precautionary reasons. He notes that a little earlier at the initiative of the self-government the settlements of Pournari and Nea Zoi were evacuated as the flames from the outskirts of Mandra, where it was early morning, “with the help of the strong wind as well as the piney and grassy nature of the vegetation, passed the height-settlement of Ag. Sotira towards N. Zoi and then towards Pen”. It also appeals for air assets to be dispatched immediately to deal with the rapidly spreading fire.

On his part, Mr 1st local councilor Mandras Panagiotis Papaioannou noted that the settlements of Villa Erythres are temporarily out of danger, and that the direction of the fire is towards Mandra-Elefsina. He also reports to the Athens Agency that there is a ground firefighting force, but it is not enough to stop the intensity of the fire’s progress and emphasizes that aerial means are absolutely needed. He adds that machines and trucks with water tankers for firefighting have been sent from the Region, and the neighboring municipalities of Liosion and Aspropyrgos, while a large forest firefighting volunteer association operates together with the civil protection mechanism of the Municipality.
