For another night, the reinforced forces of the Fire Department fought a fierce battle with the flames in Rhodes
The fire brigades are fighting the flames for one more day at the front of the fire in Rhodes.
According to the Fire Department, there was a big resurgence on the front towards Laerma and for this reason last night a message was sent by 112 to the residents in the area to evacuate towards Archangelos.
However, the village was not in danger as the fire was stopped by the firefighters.
25 firefighters arrived on the island of Dodecanese, by air, from Thessaloniki and 20 firefighters from Attica, while in the morning 31 Slovak firefighters arrived by boat with 3 groups of pedestrian units and 4 vehicles.
In total, 173 firefighters operate in the area with 10 teams of walking departments and 35 vehicles, 2 helicopters and 3 aircraft

As Mr. Vathrakogiannis mentioned, additional forces from Romania, Poland, Slovakia and Bulgaria are helping to extinguish the fires, along with the European firefighters, who have been allocated through the pre-installation program of the Union’s civil protection mechanism, while 2 aircraft from Italy, 2 from France, 1 from Croatia and 2 more from Cyprus have been allocated to the aerial firefighting.
Also assistance on a bilateral level is provided by Israel with 2 aircraft and Jordan with 4 helicopters.
Aid is constantly arriving through the European Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) and rescEU
New European aerial assistance to deal with forest fires is provided to our country through the European Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) and rescEU, following the official request submitted by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection.
In particular, due to the forest fires that continue to rage in the country amid extremely adverse weather conditions, Greece yesterday submitted an additional request for aerial assistance to the European Mechanism to which they immediately responded:
Cyprus, which sent 2 Air Tractor type firefighting aircraft through rescEU and Croatia, which sent 1 CL-415 firefighting aircraft, also through rescEU.
It is reminded that air assistance to our country has also been provided, in the context of a corresponding request submitted to the European Mechanism, by Italy with two CL-415 firefighting aircraft from those included in the rescEU air fleet and France, also with two CL-415 aircraft.
Regarding the European ground forces assisting the Greek firefighters on the fire fronts, infantry units and fire engines have already been sent by Romania (40 firefighters and 5 vehicles) and Slovakia (31 firefighters and 15 vehicles).
Within the day, 149 firefighters accompanied by 49 vehicles from Poland arrive in Attica. Romania is sending an additional 50 firefighters and 10 fire trucks, while Bulgaria is also sending a pedestrian unit with 50 firefighters and 10 vehicles.
The Greek firefighters are supported at the same time by teams of firefighters from Romania, Malta and Bulgaria, who participate in the Pre-Positioning program of the European Civil Protection Mechanism.
It is noted that our country has also received aerial assistance to fight the forest fires on a bilateral level, from Israel and Jordan.
Very high fire risk on Saturday for seven regions of the country
A very high risk of fire (risk category 4) is predicted for Saturday, July 22, for seven regions of the country, according to the Fire Risk Prediction Map issued by the general secretariat of Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection (civilprotection.gov.gr).
Specifically, a very high risk of fire is predicted tomorrow for the following areas:
- • Region of Attica
- • Region of Central Greece (PE of Boeotia, PE of Evia, PE of Fthiotida, PE of Fokida)
- • Region of Peloponnese
- • Region of Western Greece
- • Region of Thessaly (P.E. Larissa, P.E. Magnesia)
- • South Aegean Region (Rhodes Region)
- • North Aegean Region (Samos PE, Ikaria PE)
The fire department appeals to citizens to be especially careful as extreme conditions are expected in the coming days.
“In the last few days, we are facing a phenomenon that makes it difficult but also intensifies the tension and the dispersion of fires and new outbreaks throughout Greece. We are making every effort to address all active fronts with all means at our disposal. In this effort we ask for the cooperation of the citizens and at the same time we appeal to everyone.
