Crete: The river in Moires was painted red – What the mayor says

by

Residents of the village of Moires in Heraklion, Crete, were confronted with a creepy spectacle today, Friday, as they found that Geropotamos, the river in the area, had been “painted” red, while the smell of blood was equally intense.

For his part, the mayor of Phaistos, Grigoris Nikolidakis, speaking to GRTimes, stressed that the landscape will be clarified by the investigations of the Coast Guard and the Police, while he clarified that there was no significant burden on the environment from the event.

“I can not know at this time how this pollution was caused, which however did not last long and did not leave a mark on the area. “I am waiting for the results of the investigations from the Coast Guard and then we will be able to say more,” he stressed.

As it became known, however, there is a municipal slaughterhouse in the area, while the issue is reportedly being examined by the Environment Directorate of the Region of Crete.

It is also noted that in the same place three years ago four people lost their lives when the car they were riding in was swept away by the rushing waters of the river.
