Lews made six round trips between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. He and his family were removed from their hotel at one in the morning on Sunday and transferred to another hotel
A hero British tourist has described apocalyptic scenes, likening them “like the end of the world” after he spent eight hours driving a rental car in Rhodes to rescue stranded families, the Daily Mail reports.
Jonathan Lewis, from Attleborough, Norfolk, was on a family holiday on the Greek island as the flames headed towards the coast, where he lived.
The transport worker bravely moved people to safety after deciding to take action when smoke began to be seen in the resort behind a mountain.
Lewis said that: “people were saying, ‘It’s just a little smoke’ and not to worry. But I could tell it was more than just a little smoke. I’m not a big fan of sunbathing anyway, so I thought I’d see if I could help.”
Lius drove into the mountains to Lardo, a village in the southeast of the island. “People were just standing in the middle of the road, having no idea what was going on. It was like a zombie apocalypse,” he added.
The Briton, who had been on the island for a week, took a family and dropped them off at a safe hotel on the other side of the mountain. “There were no rooms, but there were seats, telephones, internet and electricity,” he said. “I saw some people taking their luggage and throwing it as they ran to the beach.”
Lews made six round trips between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. He and his family were removed from their hotel at one in the morning on Sunday and transferred to another hotel.
He posted video of the rescue on Facebook, captioning it: “Spent the day saving families from fires. I don’t like sunbathing, so I did something useful. Finally the Army arrived and I believe all the people moved away.”
Meanwhile, a British couple flew to Rhodes for their wedding – despite others describing a “living nightmare” as families are repatriated back to the UK.
Bride-to-be Holly Butler and husband-to-be Dominic Hustler from Berkshire and their families arrived at the Greek island airport last night.
The couple fulfills their dream of getting married on the island, where they got engaged. Although their TUI holiday was initially canceled due to the fires, they booked separate flights to tie the knot this Wednesday.
