Civil Protection for Schools: Why two-day distance education was chosen instead of lifelong learning

by

Sources from the ministry explained the reasons that led the Civil Protection to the decision for two-day operation of distance education instead of lifelong learning.

1) According to the Meteorological Service, the bad weather “Elpida” will affect from the evening of Sunday 23/1, the areas of Sporades, Evia, North and West. Cyclades, Central Greece and Eastern and Northern Attica. The phenomena will start initially with light snowfall in the early morning hours of Monday and will gradually intensify from noon onwards throughout Attica, including the areas of the center of Athens and the southern suburbs. The phenomena of heavy snowfall will last until the morning hours of Tuesday and then frost will follow.

2) Regarding the operation of schools, therefore, and given that there is an alternative to distance education, it was judged that it is more correct and safer for everyone to suspend for two days the lifelong learning and the lessons to be done with the method of distance learning.

3) The decision took into account the following factors: the fact that students tomorrow would have to study with open windows due to Covid protocols at very low temperatures (maximum up to 4 degrees Celsius) with the risk of having to return home at noon. Monday while the phenomenon of heavy snowfall has already begun with its strongest intensity.

“The concern of the government is the safety of students and teachers and the smooth operation of education by any means. Both are achieved with the solution adopted,” it said.
