Already, most of the island is being tested and according to the deputy regional governor George Kelaiditis, more than 150 machines are trying to keep the road open.
“Our main priority was to keep Schimatari-Chalkida and the lowland parts open,” said Deputy Regional Governor George Kelaiditis, speaking to APE BPE, acknowledging that “in some areas the equipment provided could not bring results, and thus further strengthened.” attributing the causes to the large volume of snow that has fallen in various areas. It is characteristic that in the mountains the height of the snow has exceeded one meter.
According to the deputy governor, “we are trying to rehabilitate the roads so that the citizens can have access mainly to health services”, commenting in this way on the fact that there is no possibility of moving from Rovies to Mantoudi which is the Health Center, as the road is inaccessible.
At the same time, a great battle is being fought to ensure the return of the workers from the industrial area in Oinofyta and Schimatari to Chalkida, but also to the places where they live and who travel by bus.
However, the movement of vehicles is allowed only with the use of anti-skid chains in the entire road network of Evia. Regarding the electricity problems, they have been identified in several mountain villages of the Municipality of Karystos and in fact HEDNO was appealed to strengthen the crews but with the exclusion of the ferry line Arkitsa – Edipsos now the HEDNO crews need more time to arrive. According to the deputy regional governor Mr. Kelaiditis “in the whole prefecture there is heavy snowfall, even in coastal areas, strong frost and stormy winds”. At the same time, he appeals to the citizens to avoid unnecessary transportation until noon on Tuesday, as he notes “in this way, they make it much easier to deal with the problems, with the smooth operation of the machines”.
In Fthiotida
The problems started with great intensity in the area of ​​Fthiotida as it is snowing non-stop in the area of ​​Martinos, Atalanti and up to Agios Konstantinos. The snowfall that is continuous and with great intensity has covered a large part of the areas and the problems are slowly starting to appear. The main weight so far has been given to the highway at the height of Martinou, but with the cessation of the traffic of trucks, an effort is now being made to free the drivers who were on the section of the highway from Tragana to Inofita.
It is worth noting that recently the extension of the ban to the national network was announced, especially in the downhill stream to Athens, as now trucks over 3.5 tons will stop in Raches of Fthiotida, at 242 km of the national road. At the same time, according to a police announcement, chains are imposed on all vehicles that will move from the height of Atalanti at 135 km to the tolls of Tragana.
“Currently the situation is under control” notes the deputy regional governor Athanasios Karakantzas who -as he emphasizes- the snow in the area of ​​Martinos has exceeded 10 cm. He also emphasizes that the main weight is given to the road network to remain open while he claims that the next hours are critical as he states “from noon onwards we expect the main intensity of the phenomenon in Fthiotida which is expected to snow in Lamia ».
Finally, it is worth noting that it is snowing at the moment in the mountain villages of Western Fthiotida but mainly in the part from Lamia to Eastern Fthiotida and in fact with great intensity.
