The issuance of the new police identity cards will start from the middle of September 2023, as G. Oikonomou stated to SKAI today.

The new ID cards will be the size of a credit card, cost 10 euros and will be valid for 10 years

What will the new identities be like?

According to the “Amendment of no. 8200/0-297647/ 10.4.2018 joint ministerial decision “Issuance of a new type of Identity Card for Greek citizens” (B’ 1476)” published in the Official Gazette Issue B 824/17.02.2023,

On the front side there will be a photograph of the holder and his details, the date of issue and expiry, the issuing authority and the Card-CAN Access Number will be written.

On the reverse side there will be Name of father and mother, place of birth of the holder, blood type (optional) and height (after completing 24 years of age).

Until they are replaced, legacy ID cards are considered strong.

Required documents

1. For the issuance/replacement of the identity card, the following supporting documents must be submitted in person by the interested party to the competent police authority:

a. One (1) photo, in digital format, which will be issued by the interested party, in accordance with the technical specifications of ICAO document 9303. The photograph can be obtained either directly from the issuing authorities, or the interested party will present it on an external digital memory disk (usb stick type), with the specifications of the previous paragraph. As long as the interested party has access to the myPhoto application of gov.gr, the above photo can be taken with the same technical specifications and uploaded by the certified professional photographers to the application in question, from where it is retrieved by the employee of the competent Issuing Authority .

b. Application – Responsible Declaration for the ex officio search, through the “Register of Citizens” Information System, of the necessary data for the issuance of the census data, which is printed and signed by the applicant. In cases where it is not possible to connect to the online access services of the “Register of Citizens” Information System, the demographic data necessary for the issuance of the card are obtained from a certificate of the Municipality, in whose demographic register the interested party is registered, which is sought ex officio by the competent issuing Service [ΔΙΑΔΠ/Α/18532/06 (Β’ 1309) απόφαση Υπουργού Ε.Σ.Δ.Δ.Α.].

c. Application for issue – replacement, which is completed by the competent issuing service, based on the identity details of the interested party, as they appear from the “Citizens’ Register” Information System of the Ministry of the Interior or from the certificate in case (b), printed and signed by the applicant.

d. The old identity card in cases of replacement, except in cases of loss and theft.

e. Electronic bill (e-bill) for the certification of payment of the ticket issuance fee – replacement, as well as the mailing of supporting documents and the ticket, to and from the printing – personalization service.

In addition to the above, an electronic receipt (e-receipt) for the certification of payment of the receipt of par. 4 of article 5 hereof, in cases of issuance due to loss or damage of the applicant’s previous receipt.

What applies in case of theft, foreigners and special cases

f. Travel or other document issued by a local or foreign Authority, from which a previous entry of the applicant’s information (surname, first name, father’s name and mother’s name) can be obtained, in Latin characters, if he wishes to write the above information differently from the ELOT 743 standard, submitting at the same time a relevant declaration. A copy of the said document, together with the responsible declaration, will be kept by the issuing authority, together with the other supporting documents.
g. Certificate from a nursing institution or health laboratory, in which the blood group and RHESUS are indicated, if the interested party wishes to have these details indicated.

h. Responsible Declaration of Law 1599/1986, in which the conditions of loss or damage are mentioned, for the cases of issuance – replacement of the card due to loss or damage, respectively. In the case of issuing – replacing the identity card due to theft, a recent certificate from the Greek Authority (Police or Consular) in which the theft was reported must be submitted.

i. Decision to determine guardianship or to appoint a commissioner or of a court assistant, when it comes to issuing a ticket to a person whose custody is exercised in accordance with a court decision or who is in a commission or judicial assistance.

2. In the cases of initial extradition, theft, loss or damage, the applicant’s details are certified by a witness, while for the minor, the certification is made by a parent or by the person who has custody or guardianship”.
