The data recorded by the European Forest Fire Observatory regarding the devastating consequences of forest fires in our country during the current (2023) fire prevention season are very negative. More detail:

đŸ”¥Until Wednesday 23.08.2023, the forest fires that have occurred in our country have burned more than 1,200,000 acres.
đŸ”¥The area that has burned until Wednesday 23.08.2023 corresponds to approximately 3 times the area that on average (2006 – 2022) is burned annually in our country.
đŸ”¥Until today (Wednesday, 23.08.2023) the burned areas in our country fall short by approximately 40,000 acres from the next worst performance recorded in 2021 with a total of 1,300,590 acres.
đŸ”¥It is very possible that the year 2023 will be characterized as the second worst of the last 17 years (2007 remains first, with more than 2,700,000 acres).
đŸ”¥During July 2023 more than 520,000 acres were burned, while during August 2023 (up to Wednesday 23.08.2023) more than 730,000 acres were burned.
đŸ”¥In the last 3 years (2021, 2022, 2023), forest fires in our country have burned almost 3,000,000 acres.

The above figures emphasize the need for an immediate and total redesign of the forest fire management strategy in our country. The new strategy should recognize the multidisciplinary nature of the forest fire problem and build on modern scientific knowledge, making use of services and tools already available.

In the meantime, the results of the fires in Greece are sad according to the European service Copernicus since, as it claims, having already burned 72,333 hectares (178.7 thousand acres), it is the largest that has been recorded in European territory for years.
