A man who had been in Chania for the last 5 days fell into the net of the police in Kissamos.
The man had indulged, during the days he lived in Chania, in dozens of small markets using fake 50 euro banknotes.
His goal was to have a clean amount left over from the change he received.
Specifically, yesterday they arrived at A.T. Kissamos complaints from people who, in the area from Topolia to Lafonisi, sell local honey, olive oil and local products outdoors on the street.
People reported that someone had bought their product by giving them €50, then taking the change from their purchase. After the holiday, the peddlers found out that it was a fake 50 euro bill.
Although the Kissamos police authorities did not have a license plate but only a description of the alleged perpetrator, they were able to locate him in his car. While he was being stopped in order to be checked, he rushed to throw a bag from the car over a cliff.
The police officers saw this movement and after checking him and the car, one of them decided to go down the cliff to get the bag that the alleged perpetrator had made sure to get rid of quickly – quickly.
When the police took the bag into their hands, they found that it was filled with counterfeit 50 euro banknotes bearing the same number.
They immediately proceeded to arrest the man, while an investigation by the police authorities of Kissamos and the room he was staying in at a hotel in Platanias followed.
Total found and seized:
- so far 11 counterfeit €50 notes with the same serial number (two of them handed in by victims)
- the amount of 264.40 euros as coming from the change he received during the purchases he made with counterfeit banknotes
- 15 packages of products coming from the market using fake banknotes
- cartridges
- iron fist,
- magazine pistol
- knife
- mobile phone
- the I.X.E car as a means of carrying out illegal activities
- It is worth noting that the man was arrested shortly before he left and returned to Athens.
The research of A.T. Kissamos continues to ascertain how many people fell victim to the man accused of circulating counterfeit notes as well as violations of the Arms Act.
