The passages they use wild animals to pass them safely road arteries in western Macedonia, were studied in a European project that aims to limit traffic accidents with victims of protected wildlife species.

Specifically, they were selected 55 technical projects which were created by EGNATIA STREET SA for rainwater and used by animals as passages and were placed security cameras.

“In 2019 we installed the cameras, in 2020 and 2021 we proceeded with planting and cleaning of garbage and portable materials and from the monitoring in 2022 we had the comparative results after the interventions” says the communication manager of the environmental organization “KALLISTO” Giorgos Theodoridis.

The scientists monitored the crossing of wild animals, mainly the bear, before and after the projects and found increased “traffic” from the cleared passages of western Macedonia that had been selected.

“The above 100,000 photos and videos taken before and after the interventions in the 55 underpasses on the Egnatia Road, prove that the works helped to increase the use of 32% of the specific passages both by the brown bear and by other species of wild fauna” explained Mr. .Theodorides.
