“Citizens go by boat, at their own expense, to Sfakia – We live in the automatic”, complains the president of the community of Agia Roumeli
Agia Roumeli is without medical coverage from the beginning of August, after the end of the term of the hoplite graduated in Medicine. Since then, his position has not been replaced.
In the middle of the tourist season, an entire area that is blocked off by road is operating without medical personnel. “We are on automatic mode,” says the president of the community of Agia Roumeli. Yannis Tzatzimakis. “Residents, tourists, everyone, when they need a doctor, go to the health center in Sfakia at their own expense. They pay for the boat themselves with a high amount in fact. Is it possible to leave Agia Roumeli without a doctor?” he wonders. “Let’s send a military man. We are trapped,” he says characteristically.
The problem, however, is not limited to the summer months. The situation remains the same in winter.
As Mr. Tzatzimakis pointed out, there have been several complaints made to political figures and also to the 7th Ministry of Health, but to no avail. “Only promises… Let the authorities take a stand. We call on the commander of the 7th Ministry of Health to take a stand. Don’t hide behind his finger.” ends up.
