A Belgian dived into the Corinthian and broke the open water swimming world record passing through 131 kilometers. The news of Mathieu Bon’s achievement is among the main topics in the Belgian media.

“My first goal is to break the current world record of 125.7km, but if I feel good again after this distance and Neptune favors me, I intend to swim as much as I can,” said the 29-year-old before starting his attempt.

THE Mathieu Bon started on Thursday, a day later than planned due to strong winds and very high waves in the Corinthian.

“His whole body, but especially his lips were very sore because of the salty sea water. In addition, there was a strong wind at the end” his team said. “It was a difficult finish, but despite his damaged body, Mathieu kept smiling and moving forwardthey pointed out.

Mathieu Bon chose the Gulf of Corinth because he could swim more than 100 kilometers in a straight line, making it an ideal location for the challenge.

The previous record was held by Neil Agius from Malta who had traveled 125.7 kilometers.

As Mathieu Bon’s world record could not be recognized until he set foot on land, he had to cover three kilometers more than planned. Immediately after the termination, he was examined by a doctor.

Earlier this year, the athlete set a world record by cycling 3,619 kilometers in seven days.
