The heavy rains and storms caused by bad weather Daniel from Monday 04/09, according to the latest available forecast data of the National Observatory of Athens / Meteo.gr, will continue until Thursday 07/09 at noon, mainly in central and southern continental parts.

From midday on Thursday, the phenomena will weaken significantly and will gradually acquire a local character.

For the two days of Wednesday 06/09 and Thursday 07/09, the very high levels of rain that are expected will have a cumulative effect on the already saturated ground, intensifying the problems from the flooding episodes.

In the following Map, the areas where rain heights > 100 mm are expected are marked, for the period from Wednesday 06/09 to the evening of Thursday 07/09/2023. It is recalled that 1 mm of rain corresponds to one liter of water on a surface of 1 square meter (or one ton in one acre).

According to the updated map, the areas that will receive very high amounts of rain on Wednesday and Thursday are:

  • Thessaly (Magnesia, Karditsa, southern parts of Trikala Prefecture)
  • Sporades
  • Eastern Sterea (Fthiotida, locally in Boeotia)
  • Eastern Peloponnese (Western Corinth, Argolis, Eastern Arcadia)

Indicatively, from the processing of the prognostic data of the numerical weather forecast model of the National Observatory of Athens / Meteo.gr, cumulatively from Wednesday 06/09 to noon on Thursday 07/09 in the region of Pelion, which is already facing flooding episodes, ~ 350 mm, while in the area south of Karditsa prefecture ~400 mm.

For the sake of comparison, it is reported that in the Athens area (Meteorological station of Thisiou, EAA) there is an average of about 400 mm in a year!

In addition, the following should be noted:

  • The strengthened northeasterly winds in the North and Southwest Aegean, and the easterly winds in the Central Ionian with intensities of 6-7 Beaufort
  • Local hailstorms in Eastern and Southern Peloponnese

According to the classification of the precipitation episode (RPI), which is applied by the Meteo unit of the National Observatory of Athens, the precipitation episode on Wednesday 06/09 remains in Category 5 (Extreme).
