The entire state apparatus has focused its forces on Thessaly, Vassilis Kikilias said during the emergency briefing at the Civil Protection Coordination Office. According to the minister, the most difficult field is between Trikala and Karditsa as the Litheos River has flooded and the dam in the Suburb has broken. The villages of Proastio, Agia Triada, Palamas, Megala Kalivia and Kalogriana are excluded as the waters are at a high level.

As has been known so far, 20 people are trapped in Agia Triada and 6 are missing, in Megala Kalivia 40 people are in houses and in Kalogriana 4 people are also in houses.

In the area between Trikala and Karditsa, along the Litheos Potamos, a tributary of the Pinioswhich has flooded and the dam in the Suburb has also broken, operationally the very difficult field is located, as the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, stated in an emergency briefing on the bad weather Daniel.

Therefore, as he underlined, “the villages of Proastio, Agia Triada, as well as the villages of Palamas, Megala Kalivia and Kalogriana, are blocked, the waters are at a great height and superhuman efforts are being made to approach and free the residents”.

More specifically, as he said, 20 people are trapped in Agia Triada while 6 people are missing. In Megala Kalyvia there are 40 people in houses and in Kalogriana 4 people also in houses.

In Palamas and the Suburbs which are capital villages, i.e. more than 1,000 people each so far, he noted, has no specific reference other than that the water is at very high levels and the people are at the highest points of the buildings.

In total, as Mr. Kikilias pointed out, 885 rescues have been carried out while he added that operationally, in addition to vehicles, special lifeboats are used, which continue the rescues since yesterday.

As he pointed out, the entire state apparatus has focused its forces – EMAK, Fire Brigade, Armed Forces, Greek Police, EKAB and Local Government – in Thessaly, while he added that Civil Protection forces from the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th , 6th, 7th, 8th EMAK, a total of 195 vehicles and 480 people, EMAK and firefighters.

As for the aerial means, i.e. the rescue helicopters, as Mr. Kikilias announced, the first flights started a while ago, with a Super Puma and four Bells of the Fire Brigade, followed by a Super Puma and a Bell of the Armed Forces as until recently – due to the weather conditions that prevailed in the area and despite the efforts made – they could not approach.

“I want to assure you that there is no means, no action and no effort that could or can be made, so that the people who are suffering for the second 24 hours in the area could be released sooner and in a safe way, and it was not done. The gradual improvement of the bad weather Daniel that swept the country allows us to move more quickly operationally in the coming hours. Courage and strength to all those who are tested to know that we are here for them”, noted Mr. Kikilias.
