Amidst all these disasters, a pine woodpecker, which appeared in the forest a few days ago, gives us a note of optimism
A video taken on Tuesday, September 5 is making the rounds on the internet. It shows dozens of raptors feeding at checkpoints. During this period, its crews OFYPEKA and other services leave water and food for the animalswho saw their forests – their homes – burn in just a few days.
It is recalled that earlier there was footage of two black vultures watching their forest burn, not knowing how to react. Especially vultures have a strong spirit of kindness and are very protective of the places they live and always return there. So when faced with such a disaster, all they could do was stare in wonder.
In the midst of all these disasters, a pine woodpecker, who appeared in the forest a few days ago, gives us a note of optimism.
Mr Apostolos Tsiopanoudisa forester from Kornofolia Soufli and works in the forest of Dadia expresses his opinion by saying the following:
“To clear some things up. The predators in the forest of Dadia have not left, nor will they leave, nor will they move to other countries to nest. Some migratory birds leave for Africa in a few days, as they do every year, while others remain in the area year-round, nesting, feeding and migrating. So all these species will be here in Dadia during the next breeding season and people will again have the pleasure of watching and photographing them. This year, while examining last year’s volcanic ash for my research, I learned that there is life. Nothing is over. Predators, chicks, reptiles and mammals exist.
With careful intervention by forest managers, the forest will recover and regenerate. The fires were huge. It is not enough for foresters and rangers to propose countermeasures. It wasn’t the standing trees that burned. Half the province of Evros and a national forest were burned. We need a certain group of scientists who have studied the forest of Dadia for many years. They know things. They have knowledge, experience and suggestions. Let’s leave behind the previous confrontations and divisions and work as a team for the good of this place we love and the forest, let’s get over the word independent and work with the word management. The forest is a public good and belongs to the Greek people».
