While Janos destroyed 150,000 acres, this time around 750,000 acres were flooded, 97% of which was arable land.
The “geographical footprint” of Thessaly seems to have been changed by the devastating passage of bad weather Daniel in the region.
In the images captured by the satellite and analyzed by the BEYOND center of the Athens Observatory, it appears that the area flooded by the storm Daniel is three times compared to the area that was inundated by Janos.
While Janos destroyed 150,000 acres, this time around 750,000 acres were flooded, 97% of which was arable land.
Based on the satellite data, the largest part of the prefectures of Trikala and Karditsa has been flooded by the waters of streams and tributaries of the Pinios.
In Thessaly, 5 rivers meet, in essence they form the Karditsa-Trikala-Larissa river network.
The rivers fill with a lot of water in Farsala and Karditsa, these waters travel towards the Pinios river where they meet it at the height of the Trikala region.
They pass through Farkadona, Pineiada (which is a flood zone on the borders of Trikala – Larissa), Larissa, they go to Gyrtoni and from the Delta of Pinios to Stomio they end up in the Sea.
Enipeas passes through the east of Palamas, collects water from Mount Orthrys in Fthiotida, exits the Thessalian plain and meets the Sofaditis river there.
Both Sofaditis and Enipeas pass east of Palamas and head towards Pineo.
West of the village of Palamas are the Kalentzis and Karambalis rivers which also meet the Pinios.
These four rivers meet each other and before the Metamorphosis they enter Pinios, together with the waters of the torrents above Farsala.
The level in Palamas has dropped and therefore less water is expected from there, however Larissa will receive in the next 24 hours all the water that flooded Farkadona and Pineiada.
In any case, no one is able to estimate yet what volume of water the area will receive as the water levels in Pinios are uncharted.
