A lot has changed in the hot dog recipe since it appeared, composed only of bread and sausage – with, at most, a sauce. Especially in Brazil, which loves inventive adaptations. Ingredients such as mashed potatoes, corn, vinaigrette, straw potatoes, peas, mayonnaise, cheddar cheese and whatever else the customer wants were added.

Regardless of the format, the delicacy is celebrated worldwide this Saturday, September 9, Hot Dog Day. Date, it is believed, in which the snack was created, in New York, at the end of the 19th century. One of the stories about its origin is that of the German butcher Charles Feltman, who set up a cart to sell sausage sandwiches, mustard and sauerkraut in Coney Island, an American city district, in 1867.
Since then, the hot dog has become one of the most popular foods in the United States and has been exported to other countries. In São Paulo, it even won houses dedicated to gourmet versions of hot dogs, such as Hot Pork and Popa Artesanal. Know where to eat to celebrate the date.

Charles Dog
The brand emerged as a hot dog stand on Avenida Braz Leme, in the north zone, in the 1990s. Today, it has another unit, in Vila Madalena. One of the best-selling hot dogs is the classic São Paulo hot dog, made with two sausages, homemade tomato sauce, vinaigrette, ketchup, mustard, homemade mayonnaise, catupiry, mashed potatoes and straw potatoes.

The traditional snack bar, opened in 1969 in the north of the city, has a menu of Beiruts, hamburgers and hot dogs, as well as a mounted version with two sausages and cheese, which costs R$24.

From chefs Janaina and Jefferson Rueda, from A Casa do Porco, voted the 12th best restaurant in the world, is dedicated to hot dogs. The sausages are produced using free-range pork from the duo’s farm. The hot dog named after the place has red onion and cucumber pickles, tomato and apple ketchup, fermented mustard with tucupi and lemon mayonnaise on potato bread (R$31). The vegetarian option is made with tofu sausage and mushrooms, for the same price.

hot rod dog
Inspired by American roadside diners, the place specializes in hot dogs and milkshakes. Among the options, the NY relish dog has frankfurter sausage, house cucumber relish and mustard, and the Mooca dog is made with frankfurter sausage, tomato sauce, mozzarella, tomato and pesto sauce.

Johnny Rockets
The American restaurant decorated in the 1950s, with 50 branches in Brazil, serves hamburgers and hot dogs. Among them, the rocket dog is served with 22 cm sausage, ketchup, mustard, chopped onion and relish. It costs BRL 33.

The American chain started with a hot dog cart in 1916. Today, it is one of the oldest hot dog restaurants in the world. The Coney Island is a hot dog with sauerkraut and mustard (R$26.90). Some snacks are also available in kosher versions, whose preparation follows Jewish rules.

Handcrafted Stern
Chef Alexandre Park prepares all the ingredients he uses to compose the hot dogs, from the sausage, which is made with ham and pancetta and smoked, to the milk bread, fermented for 12 hours. The only exception is the Parmesan cheese that tops the snack. There are eight options on the menu, such as the classic USA (R$ 32), with sausage, milk mayonnaise, diced tomato and sunomono onion on milk bread, topped with thin shavings of Parmesan cheese.

Sandwiches
The snack bar was reformulated and reopened in July in Pinheiros. The menu is signed by the MasterChef A Revanche reality champion, Vitor Bourguignon, and includes hot dogs. One of them is the paulista, made on brioche bread with homemade sausage, ketchup, vinaigrette, mustard and buttery mashed potatoes, for R$26.
