Thessaly “drowned”: Access to dozens of villages is impossible – The level of the Pinios remains high

Fifteen people have lost their lives and two are still missing from the deadly passage of bad weather Daniel that “suffocated” entire villages in Karditsa, Trikala and Larissa. The damage to homes, businesses, crops and livestock is incalculable. The entire Thessalian plain has turned into a vast kingdom of mud, and to all this comes the risk of infectious diseases.

The water level of Pinios remains stable but quite high since it reaches 8 meters and 20 centimeters, according to what the correspondent Panos Garoufalias reported to the SKAI central news bulletin, with the warning limit being at 6 meters and 6 centimeters.

The water remains in several villages, the country continues to be cut in two while the problems of water and electricity supply are serious in many villages.

At 15 meters the water in Keramidi Trikala – Residents trapped

The problems in the villages of Trikala remain great. According to the correspondent of SKAI, Christos Stratoulakos, two thirds of the houses in Farkadona Trikala have been damaged while 16 houses have collapsed. At the same time, in the village of Keramidi, the height of the water has reached 15 meters, as a result of which it has completely covered the houses. The authorities are trying with the means at their disposal to reach the village as 25 to 30 residents who have found temporary shelter in the chapel of Agios Charalambos remain trapped.

However, access to dozens of villages continues to be impossible. In some, access is only by boats and large machines, in others only by air, while in the village of Metamorfosi Karditsa, the state apparatus has not yet arrived.

Rescues in Larissa and Karditsa – Thousands of households without electricity

In Giannouli of Larissa and also in Koskina of Karditsa they do not stop for a minute, even with boats. Specifically, in Giannouli, a project vehicle transported people who were facing serious incidents today.

In N. Smyrni, Larisa, the water remains at 1.5 meters. Also, 3,000 households in Larissa remain without electricity, 200 in Pelion and 1,700 in Trikala and Karditsa. Also, bulldozers work day and night and remove rubble and dead animals while the residents take clothes from what the volunteers have collected.

According to what the correspondent Michalis Tezaris reported in the SKAI main bulletin, 30 houses have collapsed in Koskina Karditsa while another important problem is the risk of developing infectious diseases from the dead animals that still remain in water and mud.

The waters have also caused serious problems on the Athens-Thessaloniki National Road since the traffic ban on the Aegean Motorway is still in effect due to extensive flooding in the Gyrtoni-Sikouri area (H.T. 366) while the water and electricity supply problems are serious. Traffic is possible only on the Thessaloniki – Leptokarya section and from the Nice Larissa junction to Athens and vice versa.
There are also problems on the Athens-Thessaloniki railway network.

At the same time, intense flooding has created a new river bed in areas behind Larissa. According to the scientists, the bad weather Daniel has changed the hydrographic map of the area.

However, the road connection Milina – Trikeri in South Pelion has been restored and the machines of the Magnesia Region and the machines of the Magnesia Region are trying to reach Zagora and then to Horeftos in order to restore the connection with Volos. Similar efforts are being made to connect Makrynitsa.

Residents of several villages in Magnesia continue to have a serious problem with water supply, with normality expected to return after 15 – 20 days. The water is not potable and reaches the homes of some areas of Volos on a timed basis. Then it is discontinued and many health agencies and scientists talk about unfit water even for domestic use. Dozens of crews of the Municipality of Volos are working to clean districts such as Palia, Neapoli, the Old Port Authority, Inopneuma and areas around the “Old City” Shopping Center that have been overwhelmed by mud and similar efforts are being made on roads and bridges swept by the Krausidona river when it overflowed and carried everything away, flooding the city of Volos.

Incalculable damages, which have not been assessed, have been suffered by the Tsalapata Complex which is a Multisite of Museums of Culture and Industrial Tradition, and with many luxury catering and entertainment shops, but also the building complex of the 1st and 4th EPAL of Nea Ionia which also houses the 1st Public IEK Volos. Especially the school complex has been completely destroyed both in terms of buildings and the equipment that was there.

For its part, the Central Port Authority of Volos, with its announcements, draws attention to all vessels moving in the Pagasitikos because due to the weather and floods, the torrents that flow into the Pagasitikos brought down from the slopes of the mountains huge quantities of transported materials and large floating tree trunks in the sea and may cause damage in case of collision with them.
