The major pet rescue operation continues in Thessaly, after the floods left behind by the bad weather Daniel.

The special secretary for the Protection of Companion Animals, Massa Dimopoulou, told APE from the Municipal Shelter of Larisa, where she is located, that “volunteers bring daily animals from all the affected areas, both strays and domesticated ones that belong to families. They are clinically examined by the volunteer vets of the local veterinary association and given first aid, but also any medical treatment that is necessary including surgery.”

Fostering and adoptions started yesterday of flood-affected animals, which have an electronic tag (microchip), are vaccinated, dewormed internally and externally and with an adoption contract. Those interested can visit the shelter or express their interest by sending a message to [email protected].

Ms. Dimopoulou reports that photos of animals are occasionally uploaded to the Facebook page of the Special Secretariat that can find a home, but a page is being prepared exclusively for these animals where anyone interested can either adopt an animal or host it until its family or a new family is found.

He emphasizes that the situation in the Thessalian plain is still difficult, as a result of which the arrival of animals by volunteers continues. Yesterday afternoon, a family from Palamas even brought their animal, which it had wedged in the fence of the yard, at the bottom of the water and volunteers succeeded and freed it, the doctors examined it because it had consumed too much water and it was under observation.

They have arrived at the shelter more than 150 puppies and kittensof which some were given up for adoption or found their families, and today around 130 remain there. houses have more appropriate care than the structure,” explains the special secretary.

She does not fail to praise the contribution of the volunteers in this great effort, stressing that “it is touching that around 100 people, mostly young people from Larissa, are here by our side 24 hours a day, and offer any help needed, they clean cages, take the animals for a walk, etc.’

Volunteers and animal welfare associations that can help in the care of animals can send a relevant email to [email protected] or call 2131364020.

A lot of donations are also collected which are given to volunteers and animal welfare associations and they move on a daily basis to the affected areas and leave food.

“In addition, the response of private companies, but also of the residents of Larissa, who, despite the difficulties they face, send daily donations of food and consumables”, notes Mrs. Dimopoulou. Those from the rest of the country who are interested in helping can contact the group “Stray Animals of Larisa”, or the two animal welfare associations of Larisa “Stray Volunteers of Larisa” and “Animal”.

Finally, it is worth noting that the Municipality of Larissa has allowed those affected who have animals to take them with them, in the places where they are accommodated, contrary to what has happened in the past in similar cases.
