Critical hours for the young whale that ran aground in Salamis – See photos

The health status of the sea whale remains stable, but critical as the rescue operation of the young beak whale (Ziphius cavirostris) continues. Last night, Coast Guard boats led the small whale two nautical miles off the coast of Paleo Faliro, after veterinarians found that it had restored its buoyancy satisfactorily and was willing to go out in the open. Throughout the night the boat accompanied her to protect her from a possible collision with passing boats.

However, at dawn the whale headed east of Salamis and from 10 in the morning is in a rocky area in the bay of Selinia. The Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, George Amyras, divers of the Coast Guard and Lifeguard Hellas are at the scene, while specialized veterinarians gave the mammal special medication (antibiotics, cortisone, painkillers).

Undersecretary of the Environment and Energy George Amyras said: “The mammal seemed to respond well to the medication given to it yesterday, but the fact that it is returning to the shallows today is not encouraging, as it is a species that lives at great depths. We provide every possible medical care to the young beak whale. We are in close cooperation with the Coast Guard, NGO volunteers, under the guidance of the professor of the Veterinary School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Mr. Natasa Komninou. “Depending on the course of the animal’s health and the weather conditions that will prevail in the area, we will decide on our next actions”.
