The countdown has begun for the issuance of the new digital identities which, according to the Ministry of Citizen Protection, will premiere on Monday.
According to reliable information, the platform will open either on Sunday night or on Monday morning and the first appointments that can be booked at AT will be on Monday afternoon.
The issuance of the new identity cards – which will be the size of a credit card – will be done at the police stations following an appointment that the citizen will make on the special platform that will be uploaded to gov.gr.
After applying for the issuance of a new identity card, the interested party will receive an sms on his mobile phone confirming the appointment, while he will be informed again 7-10 days after the issue of its receipt.
The cost for the issue will amount to 10 euros, which will be paid electronically, and the identity cards will be valid for 10 years.
They won’t have a chip
As typical circles of the ministry report, the procedure will be simple and familiar to the citizens as it will be almost the same as the procedure we followed during the vaccination against covid.
also, after the strong reactions of those refusing to issue the new identities and the conspiracy theory that developed, government officials clarify that the new identities will not have a geospatial tracking chip nor will they have access to sensitive personal data.
The new digital IDs will include identification information such as name, date of birth, place of birth, nationality and ID number.
Specifically, the front side will show the ID number, citizen’s photo, surname, first name, gender, nationality, date of birth, date of issue, expiration date, issuing authority, Card-CAN access number and the owner’s signature.
Father’s name, mother’s name, place of birth, blood type and height will be included on the back, while at the end there will be a mechanical identification zone.
367 new identity card issuing points will operate across the country, while 60 portable scales are also planned to operate. The 60 portable stairs are aimed at prisoners, hospitalized patients, the elderly and the disabled with serious accessibility problems.
As for the old IDs we have, they will no longer be valid from August 2026.
