The municipality of Athens proceeded with a radical reformation, with greenery, shading, cold materials, new infrastructure and urban equipment
Her new “face” now shows to residents of the New World, Armenian Square, which has been an abandoned site for many years. The municipality of Athens proceeded with a radical reformation, with greenery, shading, cold materials, new infrastructure and urban equipment.
The emblematic square received aesthetic and functional interventions in order to regain life and be transformed into a modern and attractive public space for the wider neighborhood. It was redesigned to be open and safe, with specifications that meet the needs of the citizens, but also the conditions of the climate crisis. The green area of the square was strengthened with 19 new trees and large flower beds, while cold materials were used for the flooring materials, i.e. cubic blocks of two shades, ocher and red.
A new fountain with floor jets was installed so that the water becomes a play element and attracts all ages while creating a friendly and cooler environment for visitors, while also achieving low heat retention.

Pergolas with climbing plants were placed in the area, which create suitably shaded areas, but also seating areas that make the stay of the visitors in the renovated square more comfortable. Under the pergolas, metal seating areas with wood elements were placed, while near the new fountain and the section of the square towards Kallirrois Street, seating benches made of reinforced concrete with wood were inserted.
Finally, for the convenience of people with disabilities, ramps were built on the sidewalks and a path for the blind, which leads inside the square, while new LED lamps were installed.
“Another historic city square is radically changing its appearance. Armenian Square is once again part of the daily life of the residents of the New World,” said the mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis, and added: “A small intervention, but one that is of great importance, both in terms of symbolism and substance, for the Armenian community of Athens and the whole neighborhood.”
For his part, the deputy mayor for Urban and Building Infrastructure and City Planning, Vassilis-Phivos Axiotis, said: “Every neighborhood of the city has our attention and Armenia Square is one more proof. The square was completely reconstructed, beautified, made friendlier and safer, with more greenery for residents and visitors. A request of the New World neighborhood and our Armenian community that has come true.”
