Settings for the well-being of companion animals have been included in the bill of the Ministry of the Interior for the Local Authorities which is being discussed today Tuesday in the Plenary Session of the Parliament. The Ministry of the Interior is also preparing the Registry of Philanthropic Organizations.

Including:

  • It is possible to hand over a dominant companion animal to an animal welfare association or a non-profit animal welfare organization by its owner, as long as there are health reasons for the owner or his heir.
  • The cooperation of the Local Government Organizations and their links with the shelters for stray animals is foreseen for the management of the dead animals of the shelter.
  • The deadline for compliance of operating pet shelters with the specifications of Law 4830/2021 is extended until May 31, 2024, “in order not to disturb the accommodation of animals in them, but also to give a reasonable time for the shelters to comply after and the position into operation of the Sub-Registry of Shelters of the National Register of Companion Animals within the next month”.

As far as the Register of Philanthropic Organizations is concerned, Thodoris Livanios is the target “to know who he is, what they are and what they have. Who has the shelters of small shelters, where there are shelters.’

The deputy interior minister also referred to the adoption platform. “They will raise the shelter animals themselves which are up for adoption, so if my child wants to adopt a dog or a kitten, they can go in there and from a photo album, basically, really see all the options from buying a purebred. That’s ready, it opens. Platforms with the medical results of animal tests, a platform even for blood donors, which was unthinkable a few years ago. Yes, they don’t happen in a week. I, for one, would like everything to be done in one week, but it’s not happening.”

“I’m telling you honestly, we have we have a long road ahead of us. We need to fill the gap of decades in this part and mainly with respect to the animals themselves”, emphasized the deputy minister of the interior.
