A minor girl, accompanied by her parents, who had swallowed a pin, was rushed to the Hippocratic Hospital of Thessaloniki on Sunday.
According to a hospital post on social media, the imaging examination performed first with a chest x-ray and then with a chest CT scan revealed the presence of a sharp metal foreign body in the airway (left main loop) and not in the left ventricle.
The minor underwent bronchoscopy and the foreign body was moved and wedged in the right main bronchus. After diligent efforts, the removal of the pin was successfully completed.
The minor was transferred for follow-up and treatment at the 3rd Pediatric Clinic.
The hospital announcement in detail:
“Yesterday 30/1/2022 at 16:00 at T.E.P. of GNTH Hippocrates, a minor arrived accompanied by her parents, after a reported ingestion of a foreign body (pin). The imaging examination performed with a chest X-ray first and then with a chest CT scan revealed the presence of a sharp metal foreign body in the airway (left main loop) and not in the digestive tract.
A complete preoperative examination and RAPID PCR (COVID-19) were performed, and after obtaining the consent of the parents accompanying the patient, he was taken to the operating room. After the general anesthesia was administered by the Anesthesiologist, Director Mrs. Maria Mylona (for the treatment of this particular case) she underwent bronchoscopy with a rigid bronchoscope by the ENT Doctors, Karasmanis Ellis and Margis A ENT Clinic of G.N.Th. “Hippocrates”.
During the bronchoscopy, the movement and insertion of the foreign body in the right main bronch was detected. After diligent efforts, its removal was successfully completed. The patient recovered completely inside the operating room. The patient was transferred for follow-up and treatment at the 3rd Pediatric Clinic.
