The re-announcement of the road project “Extension of Ionian Road, section: Ioannina – Kakavia” is announced by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, with a budget of 234 million euros (including VAT) and an option of 76 million euros (including VAT). ).

The project, 70 km long, is a road section of the Western Axis. It is the continuation of the Ionian Road from Ioannina to the Greek-Albanian border in the area of ​​Kakavia, crossing the prefecture of Ioannina. This axis is considered the westernmost vertical axis of the Egnatia Road and is part of the country’s core Trans-European Transport Network.

It is a work of special importance for Epirus, Western Greece, but also Southeastern Europeas it is going to upgrade the prospects between Greece and the countries of the Southwest Balkans, in the fields of transport, trade, tourism and logistics.

The new road axis will improve traffic conditions in the city of Ioannina by diverting hyperlocal loads from the Ioannina Ring Road, while the connection to the Industrial Area will allow heavy traffic to be channeled into the motorway network.

At the same time, the project will ensure the area of ​​Konitsa access to the Ionian Road and by extension to the areas of Florina and Kastoria.

In the important benefits of the road axis “Ioannina – Kalpaki – Kakavia” also included is the service of the Ioannina airport, as well as the main volume of traffic between Albania – Greece, since the continuation of the road after Kakavia serves the coastal areas of Albania and Tirana, from which a large number of road users come.

The project includes two subsections:

– Subsection 1: Ioannina – Kalpaki. Beginning with the end of the concession contract (X.Th. 4+800) and ending with the end of AK Kalpaki (X.Th. 51+237.37) and a total length of 46.4 km of new alignment. The subdivision includes six (6) Uneven Interchanges, of which AK K3 Passaronos (P.T. 21+940 – P.T. 23+441) 1.47 km long, constitutes Option 1.

– Subsection 2: Kalpaki – Kakavia. Starting at the end of the AK Kalpaki (P.O. 51+237.37) and beyond the Kakavias border station (P.O. 74+349.66) and a total length of 23.11 km, the upgrade of the existing road is planned, which is Option 2.
