The Bishop of Oreon Filotheos was elected the new Metropolitan of Thessaloniki, with 73 votes from the Holy Synod
The Holy Synod of the Hierarchy of the Church of Greece proceeded, today, to fill the Holy Metropolis of Thessaloniki by electing new Metropolitan, the Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, Bishop of Oreon Mr. Filotheo.
The biography of the new Metropolitan of Thessaloniki, according to what is stated on the website of the Holy Metropolis of Thessaloniki, is as follows:
The new Metropolitan of Thessaloniki was born on July 9, 1977 in Chalkida.
He initially studied at the Higher Ecclesiastical School of Athens (1995-1998) and then at the Theological School of the University of Athens (1998-2002).
He completed postgraduate studies at the Theological School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
On February 16, 2002, he became a monk at the Monastery of Agios Georgios Arma (near the village of Filla Evia).
On February 17, 2002 he was ordained a Deacon by Metropolitan Chalkidos Chrysostomos.
On June 19, 2002, he was ordained an Elder by the same Metropolitan, holding the office of Archimandrite.
He served as Preacher (2002-2009) and General Hierarchal Commissioner (2009-2016) of the Diocese of Halkidos, Istiaia and Northern Sporades.
At the same time, he worked in the Catechism of Youth, as a Catechist and as a leader in one of the Camp periods at the Camp facilities of the Holy Metropolis of Halkidos, in Rovies and since 2014 he has been a member of the Society for the Protection of Minors of Halkidos, as a representative of the Metropolis.
Tyghanei holds a Diploma in Byzantine Music since 2000, he was the Director and Professor of the School of Byzantine Music of the Holy Diocese of Chalkidos, he taught as a Professor in the Special Schools of the Diocese, for Candidate Catechists and Camp Executives.
He coordinated for several years the Parents’ Schools of the Holy Metropolis of Chalkidos. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Ecclesiastical Orphanage for Boys, as well as of the “AGIOS TIMOTEOS EVRIPOU” Cultural Foundation.
In 2016 was appointed Secretary of the Synodal Committee for Ecclesiastical Education and Training of the Clergy.
In 2018 was appointed First Secretary-Recorder of the Holy Synod.
On March 21, 2019 was appointed Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod, following a decision by the Archbishop of Athens Hieronymos.
On October 11, 2019, at the proposal of the Archbishop, he was elected Assistant Bishop of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens, under the title of the once brilliant Diocese of Oreo.
He was ordained, on October 15, 2019, in the Metropolitan Church of Athens, by the Archbishop of Athens supported by a multitude of Metropolitans.
