Renewable Energy Sources: Record of Connections to the Electricity Transmission System in 2021

by

Last year, the units of Renewable Energy Sources that secured connection to the Electricity Transmission System increased more than tenfold, according to IPTO data.

Specifically, in 2021, connection offers were granted for 1,346 new RES generation stations, with a total capacity of 3 GW, compared to 103 stations with a capacity of 1.6 gigawatts in 2020, while since 2015, the Administrator has issued connection offers for 1673 stations with a capacity of 7.9 gigawatts.

IPTO notes that as the investment interest for new RES projects remains huge, only last year, it received requests for connection offers that exceeded 12 GW.

With the rate of satisfaction of applications, IPTO estimates that in the next four years it will ensure access to new RES projects of the order of 12 GW, exceeding the goal of the national energy planning for an additional 10 GW of clean energy by 2030! He also believes that improving the licensing process will further increase this performance.

“It is important through appropriate institutional interventions, to give IPTO the opportunity to focus on its material responsibility, which is the technical control and ensuring the structural perfection of the projects connected to the Transmission System”, the relevant information states.

The Administrator also requests the institutionalization of fast-track licensing procedures for the new IPTO transfer projects, which are, as he states, necessary for the expansion of the available electrical space.
