According to the studio, the aesthetic of the restaurant is one of “sophisticated rurality”
Natural materials were used by the Linehouse design studio for the interior of the restaurant Coast in Shanghai, which with a renovated interior inspired by its Mediterranean menu, is located in a traditional mid-19th century shikumen house (a mix of Western and Chinese architecture). “We aimed to create a deep connection with elements of the coast and the soul of the Mediterraneansaid Alex Mok, co-founder of Linehouse.
According to the studio, the aesthetic of the restaurant is that of “sophisticated rurality”. They were influenced by coastal terrain and chose a palette of natural materials, which in turn influenced the colors flowing inside the three-story restaurant.

The aim was to take the visitor on a “vertical journey” giving each of the three floors its own unique identity. “The colors and materials change on each floor, telling a different part of the story,” Mok emphasized.
Linehouse was founded in 2013 by Alex Mok and Briar Hickling and the duo won the ‘Emerging Interior Designer’ award at the 2019 Dezeen Awards. The studio has already implemented a number of other projects in Shanghai.
