It looks like a huge fiery front, but it’s actually the Northern Lights. It is essentially an extremely rare phenomenon, which cbecomes visible for the first time as far as the Balkan countries and as can be seen in the pictures, it was seen even in Serres.

The cause, according to the first estimates, was an extremely powerful solar flare which resulted in a particularly strong geomagnetic storm currently underway over the Northern Hemisphere.

According to forecastweather, statistics, the Northern Lights are practically and scientifically impossible to end up in the southernmost latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, as it is generally an event that becomes visible only in the Scandinavian countries, which are closer to the North Pole.

And yet, for the first time, the Northern Lights became visible in almost the entire Old Continent, ending up to the northern parts of our country, thus creating images of unique beauty, but one would also say to a certain extent…eerie.

Why was the Northern Lights seen with a red color in the skies

The red color of the Northern Lights is due to collisions of lower energy particles with oxygen atoms at high altitudes (240 km), after intense solar activity that causes a huge ejection of solar plasma from the surface of the Sun which is directed towards the Earth.

But when the color of the Northern Lights is green, it is due to the collision of higher energy particles with oxygen atoms at lower altitudes, resulting in the production of photons that emit a green color.
