Meeting on tackling phishing using phishing

The third meeting of the Working Group for dealing with the phenomenon of electronic fraud with the method of “electronic fishing – phishing” was held on Thursday, at the Ministry of Citizen Protection, under the coordination of the Deputy Minister, Mr. Eleftherios Oikonomos. The meeting was also attended by the Secretary General of Public Order of the Ministry of Civil Protection, Mr. Tsouvalas Konstantinos, Mr. Paskas Georgios, General Manager of the Bank of Greece, Brigadier General Stagakis Marinos, Director of Public Security of the Hellenic Police the Police Director Mr. Papakostas Vassilios, Director of the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate of the Hellenic Police Headquarters, the Deputy Prosecutor of the Supreme Court Mr. Vourliotis Charalambos, Chairman of the Anti-Legislation Authority Mr. , Ms. Apalagaki Hariklia, General Secretary of the Hellenic Banking Association and Mr. Grammatikos Ioannis, General Manager of Retail Banking of Piraeus.

The agenda was:

the evaluation of the measures recently taken to raise public awareness of cyber fraud in general, and phishing fraud in particular,

in the planning and implementation schedule of the next actions of the Working Group.

Regarding the first, the first joint advertising campaign was evaluated as successful, for the preventive information of the consumer public, with the message “One Pause is Enough to Avoid Electronic Fraud”. The message was communicated at increased coverage and frequency, resulting in a slowdown in the rate of increase of events and the strengthening – encouragement of the communication of the customers, who received suspicious messages, with their banks for further clarifications.

At the same time, the 24-hour possibility provided by the CallCenters of the Banks to their customers, who report incidents of electronic fraud and are served with priority, was positively evaluated.

Regarding the next steps, it was decided:

to continue informing the public in the coming months, in an even more emphatic way, with new television and radio news material, as the need for constant information is considered imperative,

the introduction of a series of institutional – legislative measures, so that the banks have the necessary response time, but also the appropriate means, in order to provide effective assistance to customers – victims of fraud,

the intensification of the cooperation of Financial Institutions and Law Enforcement Authorities in the field of repression, on the occasion of the recent successes of the Greek Police in dismantling international criminal organizations in the field of fraud in cooperation with European Police and Judicial Authorities.
