According to Eurostat, women in Greece live on average 5.5 years longer than men
Data on life expectancy and longevity rates in the EU has been released by Eurostat.
The general conclusion that emerges is that women are “champions” in longevity, with the longest life expectancy – over 83 years – in France, Spain, northern Italy, Scandinavia and also in some regions of Greece.
What is true for Greece – Women “champions” in longevity
The average life expectancy in Greece in 2021 is 80.2 years – roughly the same as the European Union average (80.1 years).
For women, life expectancy is 5.5 years longer than for men – specifically at 82.9 years versus 77.4 years.
In the Eurostat map, in deep blue and purple, you can see the regions of the country with the highest percentages of longevity of the inhabitants (belonging to the female population).
More specifically, at the peak of longevity in our country for 2021 are its residents North Aegean (Lesvos, Samos, Chios) and the Continent (Arta, Thesprotia, Ioannina, Preveza), with age over 85 years old.
In second place are the islands of its periphery South Aegean and the Cretewhere residents live longer than 84 years.
They are followed by West Macedonia and the Peloponnesewith average life ta 83.7 years.
Men live less
The highest figure for male life expectancy in 2021 was 82.8 years, recorded in the autonomous island region of Åland in Finland.
In Greece, Continent and North Aegean recorded the highest longevity rates for men, with 80.2 and 80.5 years respectively.
