Cooking without electricity or energy? And yet it is possible!

by

How many times did you have to cook without electricity? Or at least, how many times did you have to prepare a meal in a minimum of time, ideally without even having to light the stove?

With the events of the last few days, and I am obviously referring to the operation of “Hope” which caused several problems in the power supply of many households, daily tasks such as cooking turned into (another) challenge. Power outages, however, can occur regardless of the weather. And it is definitely something that can be very rewarding, especially when the first stage is over where you take advantage of the lack of electricity to light candles, create an atmosphere and revive the Victorian era.

At the same time, for many of us (you who write multi-tasker next to your name will surely understand me), the need for easy and quick preparation of meals is not limited to those times when there will be a blackout.

Holidays, Earth Hour (we say now), work lunchbox, breakfast that you should take with you right away and you want to be able to eat in the car or even while walking to work, are just some of these cases that the following sentences will loosen your hands.

1. When there is no electricity but you have time

Breakfast
Breakfast is a very important meal – it can either make or break your day.

Bread with avocado, honey and grated nuts.
Bread with nut butter (tahini, peanut butter, almond butter, etc.) and a fruit of your choice.
Oatmeal with nuts and a small fruit salad of seasonal fruits (eg apples, pears, oranges, bananas, etc.) (Tip: you may have soaked the oats from the night before to take the form of porridge).
All of the above are naturally combined with instant coffee or tea that does not need to be brewed (you can also find it in the supermarket).

Snack
1. Fresh fruits and vegetables with 1 tbsp. Nut butter.

2. Dried fruits with nuts and / or seeds (indicative quantity: 10 almonds or 4 walnuts or 1 tbsp pumpkin seeds or 3 Brazil nuts, with 2 dried figs, or 3 prunes or 3-4 dried apricots).

3. Fresh fruits or vegetables, combined with the above quantities of nuts.

Meal

1. Legumes that you will have bought boiled from the supermarket (yes, you can now find such), mixed with 1 tablespoon of oatmeal that you will have to soak for a few hours, raw olive oil, 1 small can of tuna in water, two tbsp. chopped parsley and red pepper

What does the above meal offer you: a sufficient amount of protein (legumes + tuna), good fats (raw olive oil), carbohydrates and fiber (oatmeal + pepper). At the same time, the absorption of plant (non-heme) iron present in legumes is enhanced through its combination with a source of vitamin C (pepper).

2. A large Arabic pie, stuffed with vegetables, tuna and avocado.

What does the above meal offer you: protein (tuna), fiber (vegetables), good fats (avocado) and carbohydrates (Arabic pie).

3. Tabouleh salad with 2/3 cup. oatmeal (easily prepared if you soak for 2-3 hours, about 1/2 cup oatmeal), vegetable salad of your choice and tahini and lemon sauce.

What does the above meal offer you: carbohydrates and fiber (oatmeal + vegetables), good fats and protein of low biological value (tahini), vitamin C (lemon juice).

In all the above cases, you can replace the tuna with 1 egg that you will boil on the gas. In addition, you can chop and add herbs of your choice, or grated nuts or seeds.

2. When you have electricity but no time

All of the above suggestions are equally useful when you do not have time. Here you also have the option to add or replace an ingredient with a protein food that you need to refrigerate and / or cook for a few minutes:

Eggs
Philadelphia cheese
Other dairy products such as cottage cheese, cream cheese or cottage cheese, yogurt and milk
Roasted or boiled chicken (the thinner the pieces in which it is, the faster it will be cooked / boiled)
Roasted or boiled shrimp
Vegetable milk
