“It is with sadness that we say goodbye to one of the most well-known and beloved representatives of the show” says the Ministry of Culture
Informed of the death of Spyros Fokas, the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, made the following statement:
“It is with sadness that we say goodbye to the actor Spyros Fokas, one of the most well-known and beloved representatives of the show, with an important film career in Greece and abroad.
The first film in which he participated, in 1959, “Bloody Sunset”, was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and was the starting point of his international career. His first appearance in the Italian-produced foreign language film “Morte di un amico” opened his way to American film studios. His commanding presence and his wide range allowed him to play important roles in Greek and international cinema, while he also played in many television series.
With his presence, he marked some of the most important artistic creations of Italian cinema (such as “Rocco and his brothers”, by Luchino Visconti) but also some of the most commercial Hollywood films (such as “Diamond of the Nile” and ” Rambo 3″).
His path in the theater was also important, mainly on large stages abroad. Cosmopolitan, noble, hardworking, modern and at the same time Dionysian and Apollonian, Spyros Fokas was beautiful as a Greek. His work will remind us of him. My deepest condolences to his family and his many friends.”
