13 Greek cheeses are included in the 100 best cheeses in the world
In the Taste Atlas list of the 100 best cheeses in the world, 19 Greek ones are included – with Naxos graviera first and best.
Users of the online “encyclopedia of flavors” worldwide recommended 35,895 cheeses. Taste Atlas examined 23,863 and compiled the culinary cheese list, after a vote of its readers.
Naxos graviera was named the best Greek cheese and the seventh best in the world, then Italian parmesan, burrata, Stracchino di crescenza and mozzarella, Portuguese Serra da Estrela and French St. Andre.
A hard cheese with a cool taste and light aroma
In the description of the cheese, Taste Atlas states:
Naxos graviera is made from pasteurized cow’s milk or a mixture of sheep’s milk and goat’s milk, with the content of the latter being up to 20%. It has a thin skin and a light yellow and solid interior, full of small holes. Naxos Gruyere is a hard cheese with a cool taste and light aroma. Its moisture content is up to 38% and its fat content is at least 40%. The milk used for its production comes from the animals that grow on the island and feed on the local flora, plants and herbs that give the milk its unique taste.”
Apart from Naxos graviera, only 12 Greek cheeses appear in the list of the 100 best cheeses in the world.
