A request from a portion of the residents of the Vlohos Community to the Municipality of Palamas requesting the allocation of space at the Municipality’s headquarters for the construction of detached houses for their relocation was submitted today (the President of the Community, Mr. Ioan. Koukas.

As he reported to KarditsaLive.Net, the request, which was also approved by the Community, concerns about 70 flood-affected families who, after the latest flooding phenomena and everything that has preceded them in the previous years, consider relocation to a new place as the best option for them. There are of course other residents who for various reasons have not yet joined this option, others who are thinking about it or want to know beforehand the conditions under which such a thing will be done, in order to express their interest or not, and some who don’t want to leave.

A general meeting of the residents is planned for the coming week for the issue of relocation and other residents will be able to register in the relevant request with their ID number and the number of their family members

Request

In their request, the residents refer to the recent events as well as a series of similar risks they faced in previous years, while pointing out the absence of anti-flooding works.

In particular for the extreme phenomenon they faced with the bad weather “Daniel” where the water height reached 4.8 m and later with “Elias” where the water height again reached 1.5 m, the applicants in In their application, they emphasize that their village was shown to be a very sensitive site in terms of geodynamics, when it literally sank and remained under water for about 25 days before proceeding to retreat and gradual dewatering.

“During this disaster, we miraculously managed to escape our lives by taking refuge on the neighboring embankment, while we watched in terror the whole area, our property and our whole lives, sink helplessly and disappear under the lake which rapidly and violently was created.

During this 25-day period, unprecedented episodes of large landslides of building facilities, volumes of sediment and mud were encountered, multiple building instabilities were created, and many hazardous fields were mapped.

And all this happened in the blink of an eye, while families, children and the elderly were sleeping without any warning, without any protection and direction from any government body!

WHEREAS, the general situation in this area is very bad, dangerous and there is no substantial infrastructure for protection and/or safety during any new severe weather.

BECAUSE, the embankment created 40 years ago, needs serious repair and structural interventions to provide some kind of protection.

BECAUSE, internally and externally the bearing structural Strength and behavior of the buildings during and after the flood, proved to be insufficient and extremely dangerous. There is severe damage such as damage and bowing of beams, slabs and cantilevers, damage to columns and walls, severe damage to masonry, settlement and movement, while the condition of the concrete is mostly moderate to poor. Restoring to safe levels is not only not easily feasible and of greatly increased cost and time, but also of dubious effect.

BECAUSE, the coatings show strong signs of disintegration, extensive rust and oxidation of the static framework of the buildings,

WHEREAS, in addition to the static damage, there have been extensive developments of mold harmful to health, both inside and outside the buildings, the solution of which is a very level problem that is expensive and difficult,

WHEREAS, serious damage has also been recorded to the wooden beams that support the roofs, which have already begun in many cases to crumble and not be able to adequately support the weight of the underlying structure,

WHEREAS, equally incalculable damages have been suffered in the water, electricity and telephone networks inside and outside the houses,

WHEREAS, there is serious concern and insecurity about future behavior, vulnerability, vulnerability and dangerousness, due to the now weak substratum on which our building infrastructure rests,

BECAUSE, the surrounding area of Vlochos is covered by layers of sand, clay and clay, materials which were gradually deposited by the overflowing water. This will result in the gradual appearance of irreversible problems in the stability of the foundations of the building infrastructure in a way that the effective repair solution and/or reconstruction of them is not possible,

WHEREAS, given the seasonality, periodicity and frequency of extreme weather events, such as those predicted with the looming climate change-crisis, our objective physical security and our human endurance and patience have vanished, and

BECAUSE, ALL OF US APPLICANTS HAVE LOST OUR WORKS. Having no other sources of income, we are completely ruined financially.

For the above serious reasons and having as our first concern the security of us from newer dangers against our life in general,

WE REQUEST:

1. The granting of an area of land, sufficient for the construction of detached houses for all applicants, at the seat of the Municipality of PALAMA.

2. The approval of T.K. Vlohou and the promotion of our request to the Municipality of Palamas”.
