Although the COVID-19 infection seems like a mild respiratory illness to most people today, the virus has not stopped causing serious illness and death.
Every day, EODY records cases of serious illness and death, mainly in older people or those with underlying diseases.
“This reality reminds us that, despite the improvement of the epidemiological picture, the protection of the most vulnerable remains a priority”, emphasizes EODY, underlining the need for timely vaccination of vulnerable groups against COVID-19.
Since the beginning of the SARS-CoV-2 virus circulation worldwide, population immunity has increased, due to both immunity acquired through vaccination and acquired immunity after infection with the virus. As COVID-19 becomes an endemic disease, vaccination programs for 2025-2026 focus on immunizing vulnerable individuals at risk of severe disease and complications.
According to the recommendations of the National Immunization Committee, for the time period 2025/26, at increased risk for severe disease from the SARS-CoV-2 virus are:
- people aged 60 and over,
- 6 months to 59 years with underlying diseases and conditions that increase the risk of severe disease and immunosuppressed individuals.
In addition, vaccination of pregnant women with underlying diseases that increase the risk of severe disease as well as healthcare professionals is recommended.
Vaccination for the 2025/26 time period will be with one dose of the updated LP.8.1 vaccine in immunocompetent individuals aged 5 years and older (mRNA BioNTech/Pfizer, Comirnaty, LP.8.1.). Especially for people aged 75 and over, it is recommended to administer an additional dose of the vaccine with an interval of 6 months from the previous vaccination. Citizens have the possibility to schedule their appointment through the electronic platform emvolio.gov.gr or through the pharmacies.
Other measures to prevent transmission of SARs-Cov-2 virus include:
- staying at home during recovery,
- the correct application of respiratory hygiene and hand hygiene measures,
- the frequent ventilation of indoor spaces and the regular cleaning and disinfection of frequently used surfaces and objects.
People at high risk of severe disease, as well as their caregivers and close contacts, can use a face mask when in crowded public places.
“Although the SARS-CoV-2 virus is currently circulating at low levels in the EU/EEA, its incidence is expected to increase in the coming weeks. Vaccination remains the most effective means of preventing serious illness and death. Timely vaccination of our vulnerable fellow citizens saves lives and strengthens our common shield against COVID-19,” emphasizes EODY. It urges all those who fall into the categories for which there is a vaccination recommendation to schedule their vaccination immediately to protect themselves and those around them.
“Each vaccination is another step to keep COVID-19 under control — for a healthy, active and protected society,” concludes EODY.
