The perpetrators failed to open the safe, which was empty anyway
“Coal” turned out to be the treasure that strangers expected to find in the safe of financial services, in Oreokastro town hall, in Thessaloniki. Although they managed to break into the building, not only were they unable to open the safe, but it was empty.
According to information, shortly before 05:00 in the morning, unknown persons broke down a door on the ground floor of the building, at the entrance to the financial services, and managed to enter inside. They then headed to the safe and tried to open it using a wheel.
Their action was noticed by a cleaner, who was inside the town hall at that time. Hearing the noise from the wheel, he suspected that something was wrong and immediately notified a municipal employee, who in turn immediately called the Police.
Speaking to thestival.gr Dimitris Karasavvidis, deputy mayor of Administrative and Financial Services of the Municipality of Oriokastro, described that apart from the damage caused to the entrance and the safe, the perpetrators do not seem to have taken anything else.
As he even explained, the safe was empty, since in recent years, and especially after the corona virus, the municipality does not collect cash and all transactions are done electronically. “Even if they had managed to open the safe, they wouldn’t have found anything to take,” explained Mr. Karasavvides.
The perpetrators left before the Greek Police arrived at the scene, which is investigating the case in order to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
